The principle of insulating the walls of a house

The Principle

The walls of the house are the only barriers between the inside of the house and the outside air.

The greater the surface area of these walls, the greater the heat loss.

Just like the roof and the floor, it is important to insulate the walls as well.

The heat loss in a house is

most often due to poor insulation.

Each part of the house facing the outside

presents a risk of heat loss.

The consequence is ruthless:

an over-consumption of energy to heat the home.

It is therefore very important to insulate your house properly.

Insulating the walls allows for significant energy savings.

The walls of a house are an important place of heat loss. Their insulation is therefore one of the first things to do when you are looking to save energy.

Simple to implement, the very low cost of the work allows a saving of nearly 15% of the energy consumed to heat your home.

Insulation of the walls from the inside

The big advantage is that you don't touch the exterior aspect of the house and therefore the insulation does not require any declaration of work to be done with the City Hall.

Two possible techniques:

Either the insulation is inserted between the wall and a counter-partition such as plaster brick or plasterboard.

This technique can be used to correct an irregular wall.

Either composite or complex lining panels are used, consisting of an insulating part (mineral wool, expanded polystyrene, polyurethane, etc.) and a plaster facing, commonly called Placoplatre.  This technique also allows for acoustic reinforcement to insulate the rooms from noise.

The only disadvantage of interior insulation is the reduction of the interior surface due to the thickness of the panels.

Insulation of the walls from the outside

Insulating the walls from the outside is the best solution when the external facade plaster is damaged or obsolete.

When renovating a facade, it makes sense to add insulation.

Exterior insulation treats most thermal bridges and does not alter the interior surface of the house. However, it requires a declaration of work to the City Hall before any work.

The insulation is done by gluing the insulation panels (usually expanded polystyrene) and then by applying a specific coating and finally a finishing coat or a sprayed hydraulic coating (mortar).

It is also possible to cover the insulation panels with facings such as stone or ceramic tiles...

There are also commercially available what are called garments. Factory prefabricated elements consisting of insulation and a facing plate (such as steel or aluminum sheet, PVC, etc.).

There is also the solution of insulating coatings: which are none other than mortar mixed with particles of insulating material (expanded polystyrene bead). This technique requires the installation of three layers of rendering without ever achieving the thermal performance of the techniques previously mentioned.

The insulation of the walls in their thickness :

This solution, which is only possible in new construction, consists of using new materials in the construction of the walls that have an insulating capacity. These are terracotta monomers and cellular concrete blocks.

The main advantages of these materials are the time saving for the installation, the simplicity of implementation, the reduction of thermal bridges and the improvement of thermal comfort.

The insulating materials used have a high thermal resistance.

This is how they retain the heat of the house, not allowing any heat flow (either from cold outside air or from the heat inside the house) to pass through them.Wall-Insulation-Construction

Depending on the state of disrepair of the facade of your house, the walls will be insulated from the inside or the outside.

INSULATION OF THE WALLS FROM THE INSIDE :

The insulating panels are glued or fixed by screwing directly on the interior walls of the house. The joints between each panel is a delicate operation because it will directly act on the final visual aspect of the interior walls.

This operation is very fast and is carried out by a fully equipped professional.

INSULATION OF THE WALLS FROM THE OUTSIDE :

The insulation is carried out by gluing the insulation in panels (generally expanded polystyrene) then by the installation of a specific coating and to finish with a finishing coat or a sprayed hydraulic coating (mortar).

It is also possible to cover the insulation panels with facings such as stone or ceramic tiles...

The insulation of the walls in their thickness :

During the construction of your home, you should opt for terracotta monolithic walls or cellular concrete blocks for your exterior walls.

The finishing of the walls is done by laying a traditional plaster on the outside and the installation of plaster or rendering for the interior walls.

AN INSTALLATION CARRIED OUT BY A PROFESSIONAL

The quality of the installation of an insulator is very important since the finishes are decisive for the efficiency of the insulation.

It is important to check that there are no gaps between the insulations or between the insulation and the rafter. This would generate an air leakage that would divide the thermal resistance by 5. The superior quality of the insulation cannot compensate for this loss.

This is why, even if the installation of wall insulation could be done by a private individual, the technical expertise of a professional will guarantee the thermal efficiency of the insulation work.

Thermal conductivity (W/m.°C)

Insulation materials must have very low thermal conductivity.

The lower the thermal conductivity of a material, the lower its ability to carry heat.

This makes your home better insulated.

Thermal resistance (m².°C/W)

Thermal resistance is the result of the performance of the insulation of the house.

It is a function of the choice of the insulating material used and the thickness of the insulation.

18 euros/m² for expanded polystyrene,

18 euros/m² for mineral wool (glass wool or rock wool),

35 euros/m² for extruded polystyrene,

65 euros/m² for polyurethane.

Be careful, mineral wools (rock wool) can be quite irritating. It is therefore not recommended to use it if you plan to pierce the walls to integrate light spots for example.

The cost of an insulation from the outside is more expensive (excluding the cost of facade restoration) than an insulation from the inside.

What amount of expenses does the tax credit apply to?

The tax credit covers the price of equipment and materials, excluding labour, meeting the characteristics.

What is the amount of expenses eligible for the tax credit?

For the same taxpayer and the same dwelling, the amount of expenses eligible for the tax credit may not exceed, for a period of five consecutive years between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015, the sum of 150 € / m² of opaque walls insulated from the outside and 100 € / m² of opaque walls insulated from the inside (Article 18bis of the General Tax Code, Annex 4).

To know your rights to the tax credit, you are advised to refer to the provisions of Article 200 quater of the General Tax Code.

The principle of the pellet stove is to produce heat by burning a fuel.

The fuels used are wood pellets from industrial waste from the wood industry.

There are also wood pellet boilers that are installed to replace a conventional boiler.

GRANULAR PANELS :

Pellet stoves have the same operating principle as a fireplace. It uses the heat emitted by the combustion of pellets.

Pellets are made from the waste products of the wood industry. More compact, it facilitates storage. Their combustion is slower and emits much less ash than conventional wood logs.

Pellet stoves are usually equipped with an automated pellet refill system.

thus allowing an autonomy of several days of operation.

Some models are even equipped with a timer and an automatic ignition giving a comfort of use unequalled by a classic fireplace.

A very pure aesthetic: Pellet stoves do not require any exterior cladding and contribute to the decoration of the room with very design and contemporary lines.

WOOD PELLET BOILERS :

Pellet boilers have the same operating principle as a classic boiler.

The combustion of wood pellets will emit heat for the heat transfer fluid that feeds the central heating circuit of the house (usually water).

The wood pellets are replenished directly from the silo to the boiler via a pouring system that can be automated because of the small size of the pellets and the ease of transporting them in a circuit.

The installation of a pellet stove is not very restrictive because it only requires a flue pipe.

The pellet stove is then either connected to an existing chimney flue or to a horizontal outlet via a vent created on the wall.

A power supply is also required for ignition. This is done by means of an electrical resistance that will ignite the wood pellets.

The power station will autonomously manage the operation of the pellet stove according to the various data recorded: desired temperature, programmed heating period, etc....

Pellet stoves are equipped with an ambient air temperature sensor for optimum comfort. The room air fan will spread the heat emitted by the pellet combustion in the room to be heated.

A worm gear motor automatically feeds the pellets into the combustion tank until the desired room temperature is reached. The pellet stove then switches to economy mode.

Pellet stove tanks have a capacity of between 15 and 35 kg of wood pellets.

The ashes from burning wood pellets represent only 1% of the pellets.

Since the heat emitted by pellet stoves is very dry, they are generally equipped with a humidifier that allows essential oils to be added to the air to perfume the house.

Pellet stove power (in kW): this is the heating capacity of the stove. The choice of the power will be made according to the surface area of the room to be heated but also according to the energy performance of the house and the climatic data of the place.

The efficiency (%): This is the amount of energy produced in relation to the amount of energy consumed. Note that to be eligible for the tax credit, a pellet stove must have a minimum efficiency of 70% for which the carbon monoxide concentration must be less than or equal to 0.6%.

The average consumption (in kg/h): Important data to take into account since it corresponds to the consumption at the time of pelleting. The programming of pellet stoves, which allows them to be switched to economy mode as soon as the desired room temperature is reached, significantly reduces the average consumption of the stove.

Tank capacity (in kg): The larger the capacity of the tank, the longer you can heat the pellet stove.

Installing a pellet stove is a major investment

which will be amortized by the energy savings achieved.

 

Since the price of a pellet stove depends on the heating power needed to heat a room, it is difficult to give a price range.

As far as wood pellets are concerned, this energy is more economical than the commonly used energies (fuel oil, gas...) and varies between 190 and 360€ per ton.

For the same taxpayer and the same dwelling, the amount of expenses eligible for the tax credit may not exceed, for a period of five consecutive years between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2015, the sum of € 8,000 for a single person, widow or divorced and € 16,000 for a couple subject to joint taxation. This sum is increased by €400 per dependant within the meaning of Articles 196 to 196B.
